HIV and Sudden Cardiac Death

Sudden Cardiac Death and Myocardial Fibrosis in Persons with HIV

HIV

We discovered that sudden death rates among HIV+ patients were about four times higher than sudden death rates in the general population, and accounted for 13% of all deaths among HIV+ patients. Autopsy-proven cardiac causes of sudden death were nearly 2-fold higher. We recently received new NIH funding to identify the mechanisms underlying the higher risk and rates of sudden cardiac death in the HIV+ population.
